Upgrading from Windows 7 or 8? You'll love Windows 10

windows 10 start menu small

Are you a Windows 8 user? Still using Windows 7? Either way, you'll love Windows 10.

Over the six years since Windows 7 was released, Microsoft has made its PC operating system far more intuitive and powerful by packing it with tablet- and smartphone-like features.
A lot of those features debuted with Windows 8, but they still weren't working perfectly.
Microsoft went back to the drawing board with Windows 10 to develop an operating system that will be familiar to Windows 7 users but doesn't compromise on modern features. (Note: You're not crazy -- Microsoft skipped Windows 9 altogether.)
Windows 10 has a Start Menu, just like Windows 7 -- only better.
On the left Start Menu column, you'll find a list of your most used apps, most visited folders and recently added software. There's also a button that will show you all your apps in a single list.
On the right part of the Start Menu, there is a grid of app tiles that you can arrange however you like. The "live" tiles will show you updates, such as the latest stock prices, the last show you were watching on Netflix, social media updates, weather, news and sports scores.
windows 10 start menu large
If you want, you can take the Start Menu full-screen by clicking the "expand" button -- it's kind of like having a tablet or smartphone screen for a desktop. But, crucially, it's only there if you want it. The default is the familiar Windows desktop experience.
Windows 10 provides some design changes that Windows 7 users will welcome. For example, taskbar icons glow at the bottom when they are opened, but only the app icon that is currently being used is completely highlighted. In Windows 7, all open apps are highlighted, confusingly.
windows 10 files
Folder icons are far less glitzy and much more intuitive in Windows 10, making it much easier to view the contents of the folder at a glance before you open it. Gone is the confusing and redundant "libraries" directory. The task manager is also much simpler to use.
Windows 7 users should be unafraid of upgrading when Windows 10 hits store shelves later this year. There is hardly any learning curve, and the new bells and whistles alone are definitely worth checking out.

Better than Windows 8: So what if you've upgraded to Windows 8? Here are the big differences you'll notice in Windows 10.
Windows 8's odd tablet-style layout was confusing to Windows die-hards. You won't find Windows 10 difficult to use. Windows 10 boots straight to the desktop, and it stays there.
If you have a convertible laptop or Windows tablet, Windows 10 has a "tablet mode" that recognizes when there is no keyboard or mouse present. But rather than make two separate tablet and desktop interfaces like Microsoft did for Windows 8, Microsoft chose to make the Windows 10 desktop and apps more finger-friendly for tablet users. They only morph a little to fit the device they're running on.
So if you download a "modern" app from the Windows Store, it will run in a window, just like standard Windows software. The only difference is that it has a diagonal arrow button between the "close" button and the "expand" button at the top right of the window. That will take the app into "tablet mode," going full-screen. But you can easily get out of that by moving the mouse to the top of the screen and clicking the button again.
windows 10 action center
Windows 8's unhelpful charms bar has been replaced with the Windows 10 action center. There, you get notifications and access to handy quick settings, such as brightness controls, airplane mode, Wi-Fi and tablet mode toggles.
windows 10 alt tab
Also different is Windows 8's app-choosing feature, that let you go back to the last-used app by swiping in fro the left. It has been replaced with a far more useful display of all your open apps on a single screen.
Touchscreen users can access the action center with a swipe in from the right, just as they can view all the open apps by swiping in the from the left. But, mercifully, Windows 10 put buttons for both on the taskbar so mouse and keyboard users won't accidentally launch those features by putting the cursor too far to the left or right.
windows 10 cortana
Window 10's New Features: Windows 10 isn't just about correcting Windows 8's mistakes, though. There are new features that Windows 8 users will love.
The coolest new feature is Cortana, Windows 10's version of Siri, which appears net to the Start button on the taskbar.
"She" has a sense of humor ("I know Siri, but I don't KNOW her, know her, if you get what I mean," Cortana says in response to an obvious question). But in addition to barking voice commands and queries, the search feature is genuinely helpful.
It will search your apps, the Windows Store, the Web and your files to answer search queries. It's a super-quick way to launch an app (just start typing and hit Enter when the app appears). And like Windows 8's outstanding search function, Cortana can help you access deeply hidden settings with a few keyboard strokes, helping you avoid hunting and pecking through control panel settings.
Windows 10 also comes with multiple desktops, which is helpful for cleaning up a messy workspace.
I have been testing the preview version of Windows 10 for a few weeks. There are plenty of things not to like, including the fact that you still can't access all your settings from the "settings" app. We'll cover more of the hits and misses in a fuller review once Microsoft gets closer to releasing Windows 10.
But the preview has shown me enough to confidently say that Windows 10 will be a breeze to use, a welcome change for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 users, and a big hit for Microsoft.

Update Yosemite OS X 10.10.3 Hackintosh on VMware with Windows 8.1 Works Fine

This post shows that updating the earlier version of Mac OS X 10.10 to latest 10.10.3 works fine on VMware virtualization software on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 computer.  Since our earlier guide to install and run Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite on VMware workstation uses the vanilla kernel (the original kernel from Apple), the upgrade to 10.10.3 on VMware Hackintosh worked well without any issues or kernel panics. Let us see the way of upgrading to the latest version.
The Mac OS X 10.10.3 comes with several improvements and changes. It could be the major update to original 10.10 rather than 10.10.1 and 10.10.2 updates. New Photo app, New Emoji, more iCloud options, Google 2-step verification and more changes are included in the OS X 10.10.3 update. While writing this post, the update is available as public beta only, but surely this method will work for final version too.  The desktop virtualization software VMware workstation 11 had been used for this demonstration purpose.

How to Update Mac OS X 10.10.3 on VMware Workstation

Upgrade can be done with combo or individual updates. Better check the requirements, that means which earlier version is required for particular update. Usually the combo update will have the all necessary previous updates from the major release which is Mac OS X 10.10 Mavericks.
1) Make sure you are having the Mavericks OS X on the VMware workstation which is installed with Vanilla kernel. You can refer our earlier guide here. It was upgraded from Mavericks pre install VMware image to latest version.
You will be needing to unlock the VMware workstation to be able to install and use Mac OS X as guest Operating Systems on VMware with Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 computer.
Here is the OS X version of 10.10.2 before the update.
installed 10.10.2 on VMware
2) Take a snapshot of the virtual machine before proceeding the software update.
3) Use Apple App store to download and install the 10.10.3 Yosemite on VMware. The virtual machine needs to be restarted to continue the installation. Obviously the guest OS should have internet access to download the software update.

4) As we said earlier, since the vanilla kernel had been used in the method without modifying or patching the original kernel, the software update will take place smoothly.

How to Fix Display, Slow OS X  and Screen Lagging Issues On Yosemite VMware

There are some tweaks and workarounds available to fix the display issues when using this Hackintosh method on VMware workstation. Few users complained about screen lagging and very slow performance of virtual machine. Here are the few workarounds that could possibly fix the slow performing OS X virtual machine issue and improve the display performance.

a) Using Beamoff at startup

It’s a kind of script developed by Hackintosh experts to make the Yosemite virtual machine work better in VMware workstation, VM Player and even on ESX server.  You can download the file and find more information here about how to use beamoff on VMware virtual machine.
Here is the simple summary.
a.1) Download the beamoff and extract it. Make sure you have transferred the file inside the guest OS X.
a.2) It doesn’t need to be installed. This particular file should be added in startup of Yosemite OS X for the specific user. You can find further steps on Apple site here.
Once you have added, it should be like below.
add beamoff to startup in virtual machine
Restarting the Mac OS X 10.10.3 virtual machine after above changes will load the beamoff in the startup and help to solve the display and lagging issues in VMware workstation.

b) Installing the Latest VMware tools

VMware tools for Mac OS X guest on Windows host is not available since it doesn’t support Mac OS virtualization on Windows OS platform. But we can use the VMware tools which built for Mac OS X platform. Since the guest OS is same, installing the latest version of VM tools will help to some extend.
b.1) Download the latest VMware fusion tools for Mac OS X. Click here to download.
b.2) Extract the file inside OS X virtual machine. You will be finding darwin.iso inside “payload” folder.Execute the ISO file and install the tools in the guest virtual machine.
vmware tools for yosemite 10.10.3
With the above two methods, mostly the display lagging and slow VM performance issue will be fixed on Mac OS X 10.10.3.
Hope this guide would be useful to run the latest version of OS X 10.10.3 on VMware workstation with Windows 8.1 or Windows 7.

a)      Remove the sync partnership.
b)      Let synchronization complete fully without any errors.
Sync Center is located in Control panel.

18) Remove Unwanted Programs

Some time we install programs for testing purpose or for one time use only. You can uninstall these type of old and unwanted programs from windows 7 computer. Even though you are not using these programs but some services and system files of these programs load in Windows 7 all the time. By completely uninstalling these unwanted programs on your computer help to improve system performance.  Programs can be uninstalled from control panel.

19) Speed up Menu Show delay time in Windows 7

Editing a registry key speeds up menu show time in Windows 7.  I suggest trying manual registry editing (2nd)method available here. So next time menus will appear more quickly than earlier and improve windows 7 performance.

20) Change the power plan to maximum performance.

This method mostly suitable for laptops. If you don’t run on battery most of the time then change the power plan to maximum performance.  This can be done in desktop computer also. To do it, go to control panel, power options and select ‘ High Performance ‘ plan and press OK.

21) Virus check with Microsoft Security Essential

Here's What Happens When A CD Shatters Into Smithereens In Slow-Motion

With streaming music and digital downloads taking over, what to do with old CDs? Use them in a science experiment, of course!
Gavin Free and Dan Gruchy, also known as "The Slow-Mo Guys," have done just that -- spinning CDs at high speeds and capturing in slow-mo the incredible moment when they shattered. Just check out the video above.
(Story continues below GIF).
The duo used a vacuum motor to get one of the discs spinning at a speed of 23,000 RPM -- and then used an ultra-high-speed camera to film the CD explosion at a rate of 170,000 frames-per-second.
"That's the fastest thing we've ever filmed," Gruchy says in the video, "and the fastest frame rate as well."
See ya, CDs!

Walter Isaacson Isn't Bothered By His Critics

In the last couple of weeks, there’s been a lot of buzz about a new biography of Steve Jobs—called “Being Steve Jobs.”
Now, if you’re thinking: “Wasn’t there already a biography of Steve Jobs?”, you’re absolutely right. Walter Isaacson’s book “Steve Jobs” came out in 2011 and skyrocketed to success. It sold over a million copies, becoming the fastest selling biography ever written. Fascinatingly, it was an authorized biography. Steve Jobs had hand-picked Isaacson to write it, and granted him over 40 interviews, right up until Jobs’s death.
So what’s new in “Being Steve Jobs?” It focuses on the positive sides of Steve Jobs. It paints a much rosier picture of him. It includes interviews with Tim Cook and other Apple executives, reminiscing fondly about the warmer side of Jobs.
As the new book prepares for publication, meanwhile, those Apple executives are going public with their dissatisfaction of Isaacson’sbook.
Tim Cook: “I thought the [Walter] Isaacson book did him a tremendous disservice. It was just a rehash of a bunch of stuff that had already been written, and focused on small parts of his personality.”
Jony Ive: “My regard [for Isaacson’s book] couldn’t be any lower.”
Eddy Cue: “Becoming Steve Jobs (book): Well done and first to get it right.”
Just as the brouhaha was beginning to boil, I got a chance to interview Walter Isaacson himself, at the SXSW festival in Austin. I asked him about all of this sudden retroactive sniping about his depiction of Steve Jobs.
As you’ll see from the video excerpt, I had been pleasantly surprised at how well Isaacson had balanced the tyrant/genius aspects of Steve Jobs. But in Isaacson’s view, more viewpoints are always welcome. Only when all biographies are considered in their entirety will history begin to get a complete picture of the man.

The 10 Best Mobile Games You Can Buy Right Now

Overwhelmed by the App Store? Think Google Play’s too clunky? With so many mobile games being released every week, finding the ones worth a download can be a daunting task. Most often that means sticking to the top-grossing charts, but you’ll often miss some great stuff if you don’t dig deeper.
Rather than have you do the digging, though, we’re more than happy to handle the shovel. Here are the 10 best new mobile games ofMarch 2015, and be sure to check out last month’s picks in case you missed them.

Mr. Jump (iOS | Free)
If that whole Flappy Bird phenomenon was any indication, mobile gamers have no problem dying repeatedly. Mr. Jump takes this masochism and runs (and jumps) with it. Instead of a bird, you’re controlling a fine gentleman as he jumps, double-jumps, and occasionally quadruple-jumps his way through a handful of impossibly difficult levels. The controls are sharp and elegant, and it’s tremendously satisfying to best a level that’s beaten you 86 consecutive times.

Sid Meier’s Starships (iOS | $14.99)
The creator of Civilization is trying his hand at strategic starship combat, so if you’ve ever wanted to create your own trap at the Battle of Endor, now’s your chance. Granted, there’s no Millennium Falcon, but there are also no Ewoks, so we’ll call it even. Starships does a nice job of introducing you to the complexities of in-space combat while also offering some pretty visuals. It’s a particularly good fit on the iPad, where the extra screen real-estate is pretty much mandatory.

Something is awesome in the state of Denmark. Deep literary experiences aren’t big mobile game sellers, but the Bard’s finest work is indeed the backdrop for Ryan North’s To Be or Not to Be. Created by the writer of the Adventure Time comics, this playful, choose-your-own-adventure mobile version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet lets you decide how the forsaken prince is going to get offed.

*

SwapQuest (iOS | $2.99)
SwapQuest is a peculiar blend of a few different genres, but the core of it feels like a cross between The Legend of Zelda and the classic puzzler Pipe Dream. Players swap tiles to maneuver their little hero through adventures, battling evil rabbits and the like, while leveling up and obtaining more gear. It’s surprisingly challenging, and the 16-bit graphical style perfectly matches the mood.

Flop Rocket (iOS | Android | Free)
At first, the goofy-looking Flop Rocket seems like just another take on Flappy Bird. But over time, it evolves into a pretty complex action game. While you basically have zero survival odds at the beginning, increased access to upgrades and power-ups will turn your floppy rocket into a potent, soaring missile of doom. If you dug Jetpack Joyride, this is one to check out.
The Trace (iOS | $4.99)
Amateur sleuths with a newish iPhone or iPad should definitely investigate this gorgeous murder mystery. It’s a bit of a genre mashup, featuring environmental puzzles similar to what you might find in The Room alongside classic hidden-object hunts. Though it’s not long on replay value, it’s a solid whodunnit.

TouchTone (iOS | $2.99)
We know the NSA is listening to everything we say. Wish you could experience life on the other side of the bug? TouchTone blends line-based puzzles with adventure game mechanics as you slowly unravel the stories of those you’re spying on. Superstylish … and a little unsettling.
This gorgeous adventure game features a portly creature and some really bizarre environments. But the real star is the tremendous soundtrack; you’re going to want some headphones for this one. And good news, Android owners: It’s coming to Google Play in the next month or so.
BlokShot Revolution (iOS | Free)
While BlokShot Revolution appears to be a pretty typical shoot-’em-up, the unique control mechanism sets it apart. Your shots, which are used to clear dastardly blocks that float down from the top of the screen, are flung using discus-style momentum. It’s a bit hard to describe — watch the trailer for a better idea — but the system works great and makes BlokShot a real treat.
Card Crawl (iOS | $1.99)
This twist on Solitaire has you attempting to take down medieval beasts using armor, magic, and a wealth of pointy weapons. A charming art style and an intuitive rulebook make Card Crawlextremely easy to pick up, though it grows in complexity as you earn more cards. Better still, you don’t need to spend tons of real world money collecting them.
